What is the No One Sits Solo® Program?
The No One Sits Solo®️ program, from Thumbs Up, focuses on reducing social isolation in middle and high school lunchrooms by encouraging kindness, inclusivity, and one-on-one connections. Inspired by the true story of Joe Mauer inviting his blind classmate Mike Hally to join his lunch table in 2001, the program promotes empathy and community-building to boost student morale and mental health.

No One Sits Solo® – In the News
Thumbs Up was featured on KSTP-TV, Twin Cities Live, Minnesota Live, and the Elk River Star Newspaper.
In 2024, author Joe Schmit published the Children’s Book The Right Thing to Do, with a foreword by Joe Mauer and illustrations by Kevin Cannon. The book shares Joe Mauer’s vital message of kindness to his friend and classmate, Mike Hally. 100% of all book proceeds are donated to two Minnesota charities: Thumbs Up and The Highland Friendship Club.
The book is now a bestseller, having sold over 15,000 copies, according to a recent KSTP-TV story. Joe Schmit won an Emmy for the Joe Mauer and Mike Hally story he helped produce. On the evening of January 20th, at the Book Launch Party at Target Field, Minnesota Twins legend and now Hall of Famer Joe Mauer presented his friend, Mike Hally, with his very own Emmy, written in Braille. That story can be viewed here.
